With small additions of nickel to improve corrosion resistance and toughness even in welded condition, 409 ss plate (409NiCb) is a low-chromium columbium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel.It is not as high-temperature oxidation or resistant to corrosion as the higher alloyed stainless steels (for example 304SS or 430 SS)/409 ss plate is ductile and does not harden to any appreciable extent by cold working. 409 ss plate should not be used in cryogenic applications because a danger of brittle transition and fracture at sub-zero temperatures
